Visa & Permits

Chinese visa and Tibet Travel Permits.

The government regulates travel into Tibet autonomous region of China in order to minimize the negative effects of tourism upon its fragile environment, culture and politics. Independent traveling, backpacking or hitching is considered serious offence of the laws and you invite a lot of legal and financial troubles if you are caught. All visitors must travel with an authorized Tibetan Tour Operator with a prepaid and pre-planned itinerary; equipped with necessary permits .You will be assigned a licensed guide to escort you throughout the tour. Mountain Sherpa trekking & Expeditions arrange all your Tibet travel permits and Chinese Visa, flights and tour package in Tibet either you will enter Lhasa from Mainland china or from Kathmandu (Nepal- Tibet Border)

There are two kinds of permits for traveling in Tibet: The Entry Permit (TTB permit) and the Alien's Travel Permit (PSB permit). We can get you those permits as a part of the tour package that you buy with us.

TTB Permit - Tibet Entry Permit

TTB permit or Entry permits must be produced when you check in Lhasa bound flight or at the port of entry. While entering Tibet overland, besides TTB permit, the guide must be holding PSB -Alien's Travel Permit and numerous other permits needed for different regions.

PSB Permit - Alien's Travel Permit.

If you want to go further to the "un-opened" areas out of Lhasa, you need an Alien's travel permit issued by Public Security Bureau (PSB) of Tibet. It is called "Alien's Travel Permit" or "PSB permit".

We will take care of both above permits once you booked tour with us.

Arriving Lhasa via mainland China:

If you are planning to arrive in Lhasa via mainland China, you would need to apply for your Chinese visa from the Chinese Embassy in your country.

Once you have the Chinese visa, you will need to scan the visa and email it to us along with the copy of your passport. Both the documents should be clear and readable otherwise it will be rejected by the Tibet Travel Bureau in Tibet (TTB).

Please note that you would not be eligible for the Tibet travelling permit without the Chinese visa.

On the basis of the copies of the Chinese visa and passport, we will apply for your Tibet entry permit from the TTB.With the combination of the Tibet permit and Chinese visa you would be allowed to enter Tibet from the mainland China.

Once your Tibet permit is issued, you can collect it from anywhere in mainland China where you are supposed to arrive or have it delivered at your hotel you would be staying while in mainland China, we will deliver your TTB permit without any charge at any Mainland china cities.

Arriving Tibet via Kathmandu or go overland via Zhangmu or Simikot border

if you are travelling Tibet via Kathmandu Nepal, you donot need to apply your Chinese visa at your home country or your Chinese visa will not valid, this will be cancelled by Chinese embassy in Kathmandu and must get Chinese visa from Kathmandu. We will take care of all your visas and permits our self when you enter Tibet via Nepal- Tibet border or flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

On the other hand, if you are planning to fly to Lhasa via Kathmandu or go overland via Zhangmu or Simikot border, you would need to arrive in Kathmandu at least 2 to 6 days (if you want to apply for the minimum visa - normal charge) before your entry into Tibet.

Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issues visas only on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 0900 hrs to 1100 hrs. Travelers are thus required to arrive in Kathmandu a day prior to the visa issuing days to enable us to get Chinese/Tibet visa for them. In order to get the Tibet visa, we would need to show your original passport at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. As such, our operating officer who would be at the airport to receive and transfer you to your respective hotel would collect the passport from you and get the visa. Also you must fill the Chinese visa FORM at that time and also required a passport sized photo too.

Have a look at the chart provided below for your reference for the costs on Tibet visa:

Normal (5 days) Top Urgent (same day)
American Passport Holder USD 164 USD 198
Other Nationality USD 80 USD 114

SPECIAL NOTE TO CONSIDER:

Do not apply for the Chinese visa in your country if you are intending to travel to Tibet via Kathmandu (Nepal). If you had applied for the Chinese visa in your country prior to arrival in Kathmandu, it would be automatically cancelled when we get the Tibet visa for you here in Kathmandu.

The Chinese/Tibet visa you get in Kathmandu is a “group visa” and is not entered in travelers’ passports but on a separate sheet of paper - be it one person or a group consisting of two or more persons.
