Jumolhari Base Camp TrekkingJumolhari Base camp is a superb trekking in Bhutan for strong walkers. It goes into northern Bhutan to the land of yak herders and to the base of Mt. Jhomolhari, at 7,316 meters (24,000 feet) and on to remote Lingshi Dzong. There are fabulous views of the mountains and exceptional flora. You will encounter many yak-herders but few villages. The maximum altitude is that you pas through are 4,900 meters (16,000 feet). A pass through the army post of Gunyitsawa at 2810 meters, which is the last stop before you enter into Tibet. The route enters Jigme Dorji National Park crossing through rocky trails through Oaks, rhododendron and ferns, crossing several small streams. There are numerous short climbs and descents. You will pass through several villages: Soe, Takethang, Dangochang, each of its own kind. A day in Jangothang is the highlight of Jumolhari Base camp trek; views do not get any better than here. There are lots of hikes and that you can make and a day here is spent very well. Lingzi is one of the old trade routes between Punakha and Gyantse and was used by the Tibetan armies during various attacks on Bhutan. This region has a wide variety of herbs, many of which have medicinal value. The trail traverses under big rocks and glacial valleys with numerous moraines. There are 02 versions of this trek; the shorter and easier version is a three-day trek from Paro to Jhomolhari Base camp at Jangothang, returning to Paro via the same route or by an alternative trail. The longer version crosses two high passes from Jangothang and makes its way to Thimphu.

It is a 7-days Trek from Paro to Jumolhari base camp at Jangothang, returning via the same route or by an alternative trail to Paro. The view of Jumolhari Mountain (7314 M) from Jangothang is spectacular. This Trek also affords an excellent opportunity to see Yaks. The Trek is very popular.

Jumolhari Base Camp Trekking - Day to Day itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Paro (By Druk Air):

The flight into Paro on our national carrier, Druk Air, is a befitting introduction to the spectacular beauty of our country. In clear weather, magnificent views of the world’s highest peaks, give way to the lush green Paro valley as you land. Your Bhutanese escort from Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions will greet you on arrival, and then drive you the short distance to the Hotel.

Day 02: Paro – Shana (Start of Trek):

Our trek to Shana starts at Drukgyal Dzong following the Paro river and we pass cultivated fields and tiny webpicturesque villages. The forests are alive with numerous birds and brightly coloured butterflies. Overnight at camp Shana. Altitude 2,820 m; Distance 14 Km; Time 5 - 6 hours. Overnight in Camp.

Day 03. Shana – Thangthangka:

The trail follows the river through a heavily forested area with a few isolated farmhouses. It narrows and closes in and the trail winds up and down along the drainage. We pass a junction enroute, where another path leads north over the Tremo La to Tibet. Camp is in a meadow with a stone shelter. Altitude 3610 m; Distance 21 Km; Time 7 - 8 hours. Overnight in Camp.

Day 04. Thangthangka – Jangothang:

In the morning after passing a small army post, the trail slowly leaves the forest line and gradually climbs into a beautiful valley, passing Tegethang, a winter home of yak herdsmen. Lunch will be served in one of these huts. Lots of yaks will be seen today before we arrive at the Jhomolhari base camp (4,115 m). High mountains overlook the camp and visible nearby are the ruins of an old fortress used to guard Bhutan against Tibetan invasions. Altitude 4,115 m; Distance 15 Km; Time 5 - 6 hours. Overnight in Camp.

Day 05: Jangothang (Halt):

A rest day. A chance to walk up to the Jhomolhari glacier or to the Tsho Phu lakes on the opposite direction. Overnight in Camp.

Day 06. Jangothang – Thangthangka:

The pass different vegetation and you come across wonderful places for photography. Overnight in Camp.

Day 07. Thangthangka – Shana:

You can pass over many small streams and dense forest. Some time you can see lot of different wild animals. Overnight in Camp.

Day 08. Shana - Paro – Thimphu (End of Trek):

Our transport will be waiting (at Drukgyal Dzong) to take us to Thimphu, capital of Bhutan. It takes two hours drive to Thimphu. Lunch at Thimphu. In the evening drive to Paro. Dinner and Overnight in Hotel at paro.

Day 09. Paro - Airport:

Early morning, drive to the airport and farewell.
